Hans J. Wegner is acclaimed for his chair designs that made mid-century Danish design popular on an international scale. Hans Wegner showed this chair first at the Annual Exhibition of the Cabinetmakers’ Guild in 1949. Made in oak by the cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen, it was identified in subsequent catalogues as Chair JH501 but it was Wegner himself who described it as the “round one” and in Denmark it is known generally as The Round Chair.

Bochi Wegner Modern Mid-Century CH07 In 1944, Hans Wegner began a series of chairs that were inspired by portraits of Danish merchants sitting in Ming Chairs. One of these chairs was the Wishbone Chair (1949), also known as the “Y” or “CH-24,” which has been produced by the Danish firm Carl Hansen & Søn since 1950.

Notably, in The Chair’s earliest conception, two exterior dowels joined its top rails and curved back and armrests. However, the designer recognized that the dowels and wood might deform over time. In September of 1960, when Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy sat down for the first nationally televised presidential debate, the two candidates rested on one of the most celebrated designs of the 20th century. Often called simply “The Chair,” the Round chair is one of hundreds designed by Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007).
